But We See Jesus

Duration 5:54 · Scheduled release 13 November 2026

Beginning beneath the stars with the question of Psalm 8, this anthem follows the biblical story of God's creation, humanity's fall and the unfolding promise of redemption. At its centre stands Jesus Christ: crucified, risen and crowned with glory.

The story behind the song

The story moves from Eden and the promise of redemption through the Passover to the coming of the Son. His self-offering and bodily resurrection lead into the gathered Church’s communion, life in the Spirit and outward witness.

The returning declaration, ‘But we see Jesus’, gathers the story into praise. The final question, ‘Who is this King of glory?’, receives the shared answer: ‘His name is Jesus!’

Verse 1

The moon stood high above the hills,
The stars shone clear and bright.
What are we, Lord, that You should care
For us beneath their light?

You crowned us with such glory, Lord,
And honoured us with trust;
You gave us charge of all You made,
Though we were formed from dust.

Verse 2

In Eden, fruit grew on the trees,
And rivers ran so wide;
They freely ate from all but one,
The tree God set aside.

But what could make such lavish gifts
Seem suddenly too small?
What voice could teach the human heart
To doubt the Lord of all?

Verse 3

Then from the shade the serpent spoke
And claimed that God had lied:
"You'll surely live and be like Him;
Your eyes will open wide."

They took the fruit against His word
And stitched the leaves in shame;
They hid themselves among the trees
Before their Maker came.

They heard God calling, "Where are you?"
They answered Him, afraid.
He brought their sin into the light
And named the choice they'd made.

Verse 4

God spoke against the serpent's lie
And told what lay ahead:
The woman's offspring would be struck,
Yet crush the serpent's head.

Before they walked beyond the gates,
He made them clothes to wear;
The One whose word they had denied
Still met them with His care.

Pre-chorus

What are we, that You should know us?
Crowned with honour by Your grace;
When our hearts have turned against You,
Where shall we behold Your face?

Chorus

But we see Jesus, crowned with glory,
The Son who bore our sin and shame;
But we see Jesus, risen, reigning,
All honour to His holy Name!

Verse 5

In Egypt, generations groaned
Beneath a tyrant's hand;
The Lord had heard His people cry
And called them from that land.

That night, the lambs were slain for them,
Their blood upon each door;
God brought His people out of chains,
As He had pledged before.

And still the world was far from whole,
Still sorrow filled the land;
The promise spoken in the trees
Had not slipped from His hand.

Verse 6

The Lamb foreknown before the world
Lay in His mother's care;
The Father's Son had come to earth,
Our flesh and blood to share.

He touched the sick with healing hands;
The outcast found a place.
In all His words and deeds of love,
He showed the Father's grace.

Verse 7

The hands that touched the sick were bound;
They led Him out to die.
He bore our sins upon the cross
Beneath the darkened sky.

He offered up His life for us;
His precious blood was shed.
God's righteousness and love shone forth
As Jesus bowed His head.

Verse 8

They laid His body in the tomb,
A stone across the door;
And on the third day, He arose,
Alive for evermore.

He showed His friends His wounded hands
And spoke to calm their fear;
The One who lay within the tomb
Stood living, breathing, near.

Chorus

But we see Jesus, crowned with glory,
The Son who bore our sin and shame;
But we see Jesus, risen, reigning,
All honour to His holy Name!

Bridge

Now at Your Table, risen Lord,
We take the bread You give;
Your body and Your blood we share,
And by Your life we live.

Your Spirit forms Your life in us
And teaches us Your ways;
As we behold Your glory, Lord,
Our lives become Your praise.

Build

Now send us out to speak Your Name
And tell what You have done:
The Lamb who died is Lord of all,
The Father's risen Son.

Chorus

But we see Jesus, crowned with glory,
The Son who bore our sin and shame;
But we see Jesus, risen, reigning,
All honour to His holy Name!

Final call and response

Who is this King of glory?
His name is Jesus!

Who is this King of glory?
His name is Jesus!

Final reprise

But we see Jesus, crowned with glory,
The Son who bore our sin and shame;
But we see Jesus, risen, reigning,
All honour to His holy Name!
