Only Speak the Word

Duration 6:12 · Scheduled release 6 November 2026

A Celtic symphonic story anthem following the centurion’s faith, the healing at the Beautiful Gate, and the praying Church’s bold witness to Jesus Christ.

The story behind the song

Only Speak the Word follows a Roman centurion’s appeal to Jesus, then carries the story into Jerusalem, where Peter and John meet a man unable to walk at the Beautiful Gate. Healing becomes praise, testimony encounters opposition, and the gathered Church prays for courage to speak God’s word.

Noble brass, Irish fiddles and uilleann pipes support a shared confession of Christ’s life-giving word and His Spirit’s power. A female-led prayer invites us to listen, discern and serve. The anthem closes with a commitment to carry Christ’s mercy and witness into the world.

Verse 1

Through crowded streets of Galilee,
A Roman officer drew near;
He brought the sorrow of his house
To One who stooped to hear.
“My servant”, the officer exclaimed,
“Lies paralysed in bed,
he cries out in terrible pain,
too weak to rise again.”
And Jesus heard his troubled plea
And offered to attend.

Verse 2

“Lord, I am unworthy
To welcome You inside;
But You can speak the healing word
And reach him where he lies.
I serve beneath authority;
My soldiers hear my call.
I tell them, ‘Go,’ and they obey—
Your word is over all.”

Chorus

Only speak the word, Lord,
Only speak Your word;
You have the words of eternal life,
And Your Spirit comes in power.
Jesus, King of glory,
Faithful, strong and true;
Speak into our darkness—
We will follow You.

Verse 3

And Jesus marvelled at his faith,
Then sent him on his way;
The servant lying far from there
Was healed that very day.
Across the distance, mercy came;
His strength and health returned.
The One who heard that soldier’s plea
Had spoken healing words.

Verse 4

The Lord who walked through Galilee
Was lifted on a tree;
He bore our sins, poured out His life,
And rose in victory.
Exalted at the Father’s side,
He sent the promised flame;
His Spirit filled His witnesses
To speak in Jesus’ name.

Verse 5

Now Peter walked beside John
Towards the hour of prayer;
Beside the gate called Beautiful,
They saw a beggar there.
From birth his feet had borne no weight;
Each day they brought him through.
He asked the passing men for alms;
They stopped and turned to view.

Verse 6

Then Peter met his waiting eyes:
“No silver here to give;
But what I have I give to you—
In Jesus’ name, rise up!”
He took him firmly by the hand;
His feet and ankles grew strong.
He stood, then walked into the courts,
And leapt with praise to God.

Chorus

Only speak the word, Lord,
Only speak Your word;
You have the words of eternal life,
And Your Spirit comes in power.
Jesus, King of glory,
Faithful, strong and true;
Speak into our darkness—
We will follow You.

Verse 7

The people gathered, filled with awe;
The healed man held them near.
Then Peter told of Jesus Christ,
Whose name had brought him here.
The rulers threatened them with harm
And ordered silence then;
Released, they sought their gathered friends,
And prayer arose again.

Bridge

Teach us to hear You,
Teach us Your ways;
Lead us by Your Spirit
Through all our days.
Give us words of courage,
Give us hands that care;
Send us to the wounded—
We will meet You there.

Prayer

Lord, hear their threats and grant us strength
To speak Your word with grace;
Stretch out Your hand to heal the sick,
Reveal Your mercy’s face.
Let signs of Jesus’ living power
Bring glory to His name;
And give us courage, Holy Lord,
Your gospel to proclaim.

Verse 8

The place where they had gathered shook;
The Spirit filled them all.
With boldness they proclaimed the word
And answered Jesus’ call.
The mercy shown in Galilee
Now travelled through their streets;
And we will bear His witness still
To everyone we meet.

Declarations

We hear Your word!
We trust Your name!
We lift our hands!
Your praise proclaim!

Your Spirit leads!
Your love compels!
We will bear witness—
Our Saviour lives!

Final chorus

Only speak the word, Lord,
Only speak Your word;
You have the words of eternal life,
And Your Spirit comes in power.
Jesus, King of glory,
Faithful, strong and true;
Speak into our darkness—
We will follow You.

Sending

With hearts awake to hear You,
With hands prepared to serve,
We go to bring Your mercy,
We go to speak Your word.

Final hook

Only speak the word, Lord,
Only speak the word;
Jesus, King of glory,
Let Your voice be heard.
