The Seven SHINE Pillars

The Father calls us to bear the likeness of His Son. That calling reaches into the way we worship, the loyalties we hold and the love we carry into the world. The Seven SHINE Pillars give us a shared language for this life in Christ, helping us recognise what we have received and respond with faith.

Each Pillar names an aspect of Christian life to receive, pray and practise within the Father’s household. Follow its link into the daily resource, open Scripture and bring what you discover before God. As we behold Christ and answer His grace, the Holy Spirit forms His likeness in us and equips us to make Him known.

The five central themes spell SHINE. Baptismal Identity and Eucharistic Participation stand at either end, giving us seven Pillars. Together they hold before us the life we receive in Christ and the communion we continue to share at His Table. We return to every Pillar throughout our growth; the weekly days give each one particular attention.

The SHINE Pillars provide a Christian discipleship framework for growing in Christ. Each names a reality we receive and practise together, from baptismal belonging to Eucharistic participation, with praise and witness carried into daily life.

Baptismal Identity

Live from the belonging Christ has given you.

The water marks a new belonging. In baptism we are joined to Jesus Christ in His death and resurrection, received into the Father’s household and called to walk in His risen life. You can bring your history before Him and learn to live as someone He has made His own. The Spirit teaches us to approach the Father as beloved children.

This belonging gives courage to repent, receive forgiveness and take the next faithful step. Within the Church, we learn to ask for help and offer it, honour one another’s gifts and carry those whose strength is failing. Our life together becomes a place where the welcome of Christ can be seen and shared.

See His Glory

Let the worth of Christ awaken your deepest love.

Our attention is pulled in many directions. Christ is worthy of the full weight of our lives. In Scripture we behold the Lord who welcomes children, touches the unclean, gives Himself on the cross and rises in glory. His holiness and compassion call forth a longing to know Him more deeply.

As we behold the Lord, the Holy Spirit transforms us into His likeness (2 Corinthians 3:18). The Gospel brings God’s glory before us in the face of Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 4:4–6). His worth exposes the lesser things that have governed us and draws our love towards Him. We answer with repentance and obedience, and His goodness begins to shape how we treat others. The Christ whose glory captivates us becomes the One we long for them to know.

Pray on Tuesday: See His Glory

Hold Fast His Truth

Hold fast to the Lord whose worth you have discovered.

The man who found treasure in a field sold all he had with joy. Jesus gives us that picture of His kingdom in Matthew 13:44. When Christ becomes our treasure, fidelity grows from love. His truth gives us something worth holding when pressure rises, conviction costs us, or fear urges us to surrender our hope.

We return to Scripture, remember His faithfulness and confess the gospel together. His promises steady our prayers and His lordship guides our choices. We can tell the truth, resist temptation and remain faithful through opposition, strengthening one another along the way. A faith held with such love becomes a hope we can speak with conviction.

Pray on Wednesday: Hold Fast His Truth

Increase in His Strength

Receive His strength for the life and calling before you.

There are days when the need before us exceeds the strength we can find within ourselves. The Father gives His Holy Spirit. Through Him, Christ dwells in our hearts and we grow in the knowledge of His love. We draw near to the throne of grace with our weakness, asking to be filled and strengthened for what lies ahead (Ephesians 3:16–19; Hebrews 4:16).

The Spirit feeds us through the written Word, forms holy character and gives gifts for the good of others. We pray for healing, receive anointing with oil in the Church’s ministry, and resist evil in Christ’s strength. He empowers ordinary people to serve with love and proclaim Jesus with courage. Bring Him your need, and offer Him your availability.

Pray on Thursday: Increase in His Strength

Navigate by His Wisdom

Find a faithful way through the relationships before you.

A difficult conversation can reveal how much we need the wisdom of Christ. We want to speak truthfully, listen well and act with mercy. His wisdom teaches us to recognise the next faithful step when hurt, responsibility or uncertainty makes the way difficult to see.

We bring our decisions before God, listen to Scripture and seek wise counsel. His Spirit forms the patience to hear another person, the courage to confess wrong and the judgement to protect someone vulnerable. Forgiveness and truthful boundaries can belong together. As His wisdom shapes our relationships, we become better able to carry His reconciling love into the world (James 3:17–18; 2 Corinthians 5:18–20).

Pray on Friday: Navigate by His Wisdom

Exclaim His Name with Awe and Joy

Give the goodness of Christ a voice.

What we come to love seeks expression. We tell someone about an unexpected kindness; we call a friend to share a beautiful view. As the glory of Christ takes hold of us, awe and joy find words. We bless His Name in worship and speak of His goodness to the people around us.

Peter describes a royal priesthood called to proclaim the praises of Him who brought us into His light (1 Peter 2:9, NKJV). Praise and proclamation share this attention to who God is and what He has done. Our words rise to God in thanksgiving and reach towards others in testimony and gospel invitation. The Psalms teach us this movement from singing to the Lord to declaring His glory among the nations (Psalm 96:1–3).

You can begin with what Scripture has helped you see and what you can honestly testify. Thank Him aloud. Speak of Jesus with someone you know. Ask the Spirit for courage when fear presses you towards silence. The risen Lord is worthy of our love, and the world needs to hear His good news.

Eucharistic Participation

Receive together the life you are sent to share.

Bread is broken. The cup is shared. At the Lord’s Table, the gathered Church gives thanks for Jesus Christ and His once-for-all offering. Through the Holy Spirit, remembrance is living participation in our crucified and risen Lord. We receive His gifts as one body, proclaiming His death and looking towards His coming in glory.

Paul connects the bread and cup with our participation in Christ and our belonging to one body (1 Corinthians 10:16–17). The person receiving beside us shares this gift. Their need concerns us, and the mercy we receive gives us a reason to seek their good. The thanksgiving of the gathered Church continues as we care for one another and speak of the Lord who brings us near.

This communion reaches into our life together. The mercy we receive calls us towards reconciliation; the bread we share directs our attention to those who hunger. We rise to serve as the Father’s royal household, carrying Christ’s welcome and speaking His gospel. Water, oil and table give this life an embodied movement: received into Christ, consecrated by His Spirit, gathered in thanksgiving and sent into the world.

Understanding the short labels

The short form B–SHINE–E helps us remember the seven Pillars and echoes “Be Shiney”. It points to our aim as God’s people: to become a shining people, reflecting Christ’s glory in our lives and proclaiming His name. B names Baptismal Identity; SHINE carries See His Glory, Hold Fast His Truth, Increase in His Strength, Navigate by His Wisdom, and Exclaim His Name with Awe and Joy. The final E names Eucharistic Participation, written Eu in the expanded form B–SHINE–Eu. In the maps, Ex identifies Exclaim and distinguishes it from Eu. The full names remain our starting point; the letters are a memory aid.

How the pillars shape the series

The five Formation Series volumes make room to stay with these realities through Scripture, reflection and prayer. Each gives particular attention to one central Pillar while drawing it into the whole life we share in Christ. Read with a desire to know Him, then carry what you receive into worship, relationships and witness.

Baptismal Identity and Eucharistic Participation frame this journey in received belonging and gathered participation. We learn to live from Christ’s gift, return to His Table with thanksgiving, and go out in the strength of His Spirit to make Him known.

A life shaped by the Lord’s Prayer

Jesus gives us words large enough to hold our whole lives. We approach the Father, honour His Name and ask for His kingdom to come. We bring Him our daily needs, receive forgiveness, learn to forgive and seek deliverance from evil. The concluding praise turns our attention again to His kingdom, power and glory.

SHINE draws on this prayer as a guide to formation. Its petitions help us bring love, trust, allegiance and need before God together. As we pray, the Holy Spirit teaches us to live what we ask: to share bread, seek reconciliation, resist evil and carry the good news of Christ into the world.
