B — BAPTISMAL IDENTITY

Our Father in heaven, holy is Your Name. You are the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the source of every good gift and the One from whom every family in heaven and earth receives its name. Before we knew how to seek You, You moved towards us in Your Son. Before we could make a home with You, You opened Your household to us in Christ. We adore You because Your welcome is holy, Your mercy is steadfast, and Your love does not depend upon our ability to make ourselves worthy.

Lord Jesus Christ, beloved Son of the Father, You entered our humanity, carried it through death, and raised it into newness of life. You are the true Son in whom we receive adoption by grace. Holy Spirit, Spirit of adoption, You make this gift living within us. You teach the Church to cry, Abba, Father. You join us to Christ and to one another. Father, Son and Holy Spirit, receive our worship as we begin the week inside the life You have given.

Father, we thank You for the Gospel before we ask You for anything. Thank You for the Son who came near when we were far away. Thank You for the Cross, where the old dominion of sin was judged; for the grave that could not hold Him; for the Resurrection that opened new creation; and for the Ascension, where the crucified One reigns as Lord. Thank You that our life is now gathered under His Name.

We thank You for baptism and for the grace it announces and embodies. We have been baptised into Christ Jesus, into His death, and called to walk in newness of life (Romans 6:3–4). Water receives us into a reality we did not manufacture. Thank You that we are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God (Ephesians 2:19). Thank You for brothers and sisters, for the Body of Christ, and for the royal priesthood through whom You make Your praise known.

Today we remember our baptismal belonging. We have died with Christ, and our old masters do not possess final naming rights over us. We have been raised with Christ, and our life is hidden with Him in God. We belong to the Father in the Son through the Holy Spirit. Our stories, wounds, achievements and failures remain real, but they no longer stand above the Name into which You have received us.

We remember the first word Jesus gives His disciples in prayer: Our. You have not gathered a collection of isolated spiritual lives. You are building a household, a temple of living stones, a Body in which every member belongs to the others. We remember that privilege becomes vocation. Under Jesus Christ, our unique Great High Priest, You have made us a royal priesthood to worship, intercede, bless, serve and make Your goodness known.

Father, bring us into Your light. Forgive us where our lips have called You Father while our habits have lived as though everything depended upon us. Forgive the anxious striving by which we try to secure a place already given in Christ. Forgive us for measuring ourselves against other people, for allowing praise to inflate us and criticism to govern our peace, and for letting disappointment tell us what You are like.

Forgive us where we have wanted belonging without the household. We have sometimes guarded our time, gifts and attention from the very people You have joined to us. We have withdrawn when communion became costly. We have kept old resentments alive. We have treated difference as inconvenience and weakness as burden. Forgive us where class, age, race, nationality, church tradition, education, status, politics or personality have built walls that Christ did not build. Make our baptismal confession visible in the way we receive one another.

Standing in the grace You have given us, we renounce every name that contradicts the Gospel. We renounce the lie that we are abandoned. We renounce the lie that we must earn our place in Your household. We renounce the voice that says our worst failure has greater authority than the Cross of Christ. We renounce shame that drives us from Your presence, pride that makes us unwilling to receive help, and comparison that turns brothers and sisters into rivals.

In the Name of Jesus Christ, we resist accusation that seeks to drag Your people back into slavery. We refuse the world’s demand that we endlessly construct ourselves from approval, possessions, success, sexuality, influence or tribe. We refuse the enemy’s whisper that we are alone. Give us repentance without despair, humility without self-contempt, confidence without pride, and belonging that opens our lives towards others.

Father, You have spoken, and therefore we confess Your truth. Jesus Christ has died. Jesus Christ is risen. Jesus Christ is Lord. In Him we have received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry, Abba, Father (Romans 8:15). We are Your children in Christ and heirs with Him. We are members of Your household, living stones in the dwelling You are building by the Spirit.

We confess that we are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, called from darkness into Your marvellous light so that we may proclaim Your praises (1 Peter 2:9). Fear will not name us. Failure will not name us. Success will not name us. The crowd will not name us. We receive the Name under which You have gathered us, and we receive the people whom You have placed beside us.

Holy Spirit, make baptismal life tangible among us. Where truth has remained language, bring it into affection, habit and obedience. Where our minds know adoption but our bodies still brace for rejection, settle us in the Father’s love. Where human fatherhood has wounded or distorted the word Father, reveal the Father through the Son with patience and truth. Where shame has settled into memory and imagination, bring the light of Christ.

Form Christ in our speech, our homes, our churches, our handling of money, our response to criticism and our exercise of authority. Teach us to receive without passivity and to serve without striving for significance. Give us the grace to be carried when we are weak and the readiness to carry others when strength has been entrusted to us. Make the household of God a place where holiness and mercy, truth and welcome, discipline and tenderness belong together.

Father, we carry before You those who feel like strangers: refugees and displaced people, the lonely, the bereaved, children without safe homes, adults whose families have fractured, and those who have never known stable belonging. Give shelter, friendship, protection and people who will remain. Strengthen foster families, adoptive families, carers and all who open their homes in costly love.

We pray for those estranged from the Church through betrayal, abuse, hypocrisy or rejection. Bring truth into hidden places. Bring justice where wrongdoing has been concealed. Protect the vulnerable. Heal what can be healed. Restore trust only where truth, repentance and safety make it possible. Raise congregations that resemble the Father’s household: places where the poor are honoured, the weak are carried, the gifted serve, generations meet, repentance is possible and the Name of Jesus is loved more than reputation.

Father, because Jesus Christ has triumphed, we stand against every power that seeks to return Your people to fear, bondage and accusation. Where patterns of addiction, violence, abandonment, bitterness or secrecy have passed through families, break their continuing hold and establish new patterns of truth, holiness, tenderness and faithfulness. Where minds are tormented by accusation, speak the peace of the risen Christ.

Where there is sickness, Lord Jesus, stretch out Your hand to heal. Where there is oppression, bring deliverance. Where there is despair, awaken hope. Where sin has become habitual, give courage for confession, practical help and persevering freedom. We ask for more than survival. By Your Spirit, form a people who can inhabit the freedom Christ has won and carry that freedom towards others.

Father, because we belong to You, we offer ourselves again. Take our bodies, voices, homes, time, strength, possessions, wounds and gifts. Make them available for love. When we are insulted, remind us whose Name we carry. When we succeed, guard us from self-exaltation. When we fail, lead us quickly into repentance and grace. When another person flourishes, teach us to rejoice. When someone is overlooked, make us notice.

Send us into this week as sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, members of one Body and a royal priesthood under Christ our Great High Priest. Let our homes carry Your welcome, our relationships reveal reconciliation, our worship carry intercession, and our ordinary faithfulness announce that another Kingdom has come near. Water has received us into Christ. Keep forming us until the household bears the likeness of the Son and carries His Name with joy. To the Father, through the Son, in the Holy Spirit, be honour and glory, now and always.
