A man’s spade strikes something hard beneath an ordinary field. He clears the soil and discovers treasure. Jesus tells how joy moves him to sell what he owns and buy the field. In a second short parable, a merchant searching for fine pearls finds one of incomparable value and sells his possessions to obtain it (Matthew 13:44–46). Both discoveries change what the finder is willing to surrender. The treasure gives the cost its meaning. Jesus invites us to recognise the worth of His kingdom and answer with our lives.

When we begin to recognise Christ’s worth, we discover a reason to remain faithful when obedience becomes costly. Tuesday’s meditation explores His glory and the desires it awakens. Today we consider how that discovery becomes allegiance: we hold fast to His truth because we have come to trust and love the One who speaks.
The man in the field acts from joy. For joy over it he sells all that he has (Matthew 13:44). The pearl of great price produces the same clarity. Once incomparable worth has been recognised, other things find their proper place.
Holy contention begins here. We contend for His glory because we have seen His worth and His worthiness. We hold fast because Christ has become treasure to us. Fidelity may carry a real cost, yet love has found something it refuses to exchange.
Now the Lord’s Prayer opens further: Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10). Beholding becomes allegiance because the King has become precious to us. We desire His reign because we have tasted His goodness. We seek His will because nothing rivals the beauty of the One whose will it is.
Holding fast draws our whole lives into allegiance to Jesus. He names Himself the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6, NKJV). We receive His teaching because we trust the One who speaks. His Word shapes our choices, His faithfulness steadies our prayers, and His love teaches us how to carry His truth among others.
His worth changes the tone of obedience. Grace has already placed the Treasure before us, and obedience answers with joy. Lesser treasures lose their claim to ultimacy in the presence of the Pearl.
The slow cooling of love can be as dangerous as obvious falsehood. Forgetfulness. Compromise. Fear of rejection. Conviction can quietly bend around whatever promises comfort, status or acceptance. Temptation asks us to treat another good as more desirable than the glory we have seen.
Holding fast requires resistance, and the Cross governs the manner of the battle. Our contention must resemble Christ, for the King whose reign we seek is the crucified and risen Lord.
The Spirit forms Christ’s character in the way we hold His truth. He gives courage to speak honestly and resist evil, while teaching us to answer pressure with humility and guard our hearts from contempt. We remain faithful because Christ is worthy, seeking to make His goodness visible even when obedience costs us.
Sometimes the cost is small: an honest sentence, an apology, a refusal to join gossip, a decision changed because Scripture has spoken. Sometimes fidelity costs reputation, opportunity or relationship. Some members of Christ’s Body bear far heavier costs.
In every case the question reaches beneath duty: What have we seen? What do we love? What is worth keeping when other things are stripped away?
Hebrews answers communally: Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering (Hebrews 10:23), then calls the Church to stir one another towards love and good works. We hold fast together. The Father’s household steadies its members when hands weaken and courage falters.
Wednesday already points towards Friday. The Kingdom we ask to come must appear among us. The Truth we treasure becomes the Way we walk and the Life that appears between us — in forgiveness, mercy, truthful judgement, reconciliation and peace.
We contend for His glory because our hearts have discovered a greater treasure. Nothing else compares.
Today We Enter
Today we place our loyalties and desires beneath the lordship of Jesus Christ. We ask where fear has softened truth, where pride has weaponised it, and where another treasure has quietly claimed too much of our hearts. Then we pray for His Kingdom to come — first among us.

Talking back means answering temptation with the truth of Scripture. Following Jesus’ example, we name the lie or sinful invitation, speak the fitting words of Scripture, and offer our allegiance to Him.
