The story behind the song

Where Is the God of Elijah? is a sweeping Celtic Christian anthem from BeShiny Anthems. From Elijah’s fire, rain and frailty to Elisha at the Jordan, John the Baptist and the baptism of Jesus, the story becomes a declaration of our identity in Christ. Male and female voices, Celtic instruments and soaring bagpipes carry an elegiac opening into a bold proclamation: “Bold as lions, strong in grace.”

Opening

A mantle lay beside the stream
A prophet stood alone
Where is the God of Elijah
The God his master had known

Verse 1

Elijah stood before the king
And spoke the word of God
The ravens fed him by the brook
Through drought he walked with God
He built the altar stone by stone
They drenched the offering there
The water filled the trench below
Then fire fell at his prayer

Verse 2

He prayed that hearts would turn again
And people bowed in awe
Then climbed the mountain, bent in prayer
A cloud rose from the shore
As small as one man's hand at first
It gathered wind and rain
The heavens opened on the fields
And life sprang up again

Verse 3

Yet underneath the broom tree
He wept and longed to die
The Lord brought food and gave him rest
And heard his weary cry
Elijah shared our human frame
Our frailty and our fears
He prayed, and God unlocked the skies
The same God hears us here

Verse 4

Elisha watched his master go
The whirlwind swept the sky
He took the mantle to the stream
And raised that ancient cry
Where is the God of Elijah
He struck the waters wide
The river parted at his feet
He crossed the other side

Chorus

Bold as lions, strong in grace
Through Your Son we seek Your face
You are Lord, You are God
God of Elijah, here with us
God and Father of Jesus Christ
You have raised us into life
You are Lord, You are God
God of Elijah, here with us

Verse 5

Then John stood in the Jordan
And called the crowds to turn
With Elijah's spirit and power
His words within them burned
Prepare the way before the Lord
Make straight the paths for Him
He pointed them to Jesus Christ
The Lamb who bears our sin

Verse 6

Then Jesus came to John that day
And entered Jordan's flow
The heavens opened over Him
The Spirit came like a dove
The Father named His own dear Son
And spoke His deep delight
The One who walked into those waves
Would lead us into life

Chorus

Bold as lions, strong in grace
Through Your Son we seek Your face
You are Lord, You are God
God of Elijah, here with us
God and Father of Jesus Christ
You have raised us into life
You are Lord, You are God
God of Elijah, here with us

Life in Christ

You bore our sins upon the cross
And rose beyond the grave
Baptised into Your death and life
We live in You who save
Our sins forgiven through Your blood
Made righteous by Your grace
Your Spirit cries within our hearts
Our Father, we seek Your face

Declaration

When old accusations rise
We stand in Jesus' Name
The Father's children, joined in Christ
His goodness we proclaim

Prayer

God of Elijah, hear our prayer
God of Elisha, You are here
God of John the Baptist, hear
Your sons and daughters drawing near
God and Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ, Your precious Son
Through the waters, by Your Spirit
You have joined us into one

Final chorus

Bold as lions, strong in grace
Through Your Son we seek Your face
You are Lord, You are God
God of Elijah, here with us
God and Father of Jesus Christ
You have raised us into life
You are Lord, You are God
God of Elijah, here with us

Sending

We will pray and we will stand
We will serve with open hands
We will bear Your Name with joy
We will lift a faithful voice
You are Lord, You are God
God of Elijah, here with us
Send us out in Jesus' Name
Let the nations sing Your praise
